How Domain Pricing Works

Domain pricing varies by TLD and registrar. This tool shows base registry pricing. For price comparisons, check TLD-List.com. We recommend Spaceship for competitive pricing.

Registration Price

The initial cost to register a domain for the first year. Some registrars offer promotional pricing.

Renewal Price

The annual cost to renew after the first year. Often higher than registration—this is the true ongoing cost.

Premium Domains

Some domains are "premium" at the registry level. These prices are set by the registry, not the registrar, and will always be at this price or higher.

What Makes a Domain Premium?

  • Short, memorable names (1-3 characters)
  • Common dictionary words
  • High-demand keywords
  • Previously registered domains

Why .COM Is Never Registry Premium

Verisign (.com registry) doesn't use premium pricing. All .com domains have the same base price (~$9-10/year). Aftermarket .com premiums are secondary market pricing, not registry.

Pricing Tips

  • Compare renewal prices — Some registrars offer low first-year pricing but higher renewal costs.
  • Watch for promotions — Many registrars run seasonal promotions for specific TLDs.
  • Consider long-term registration — Registering for multiple years can lock in current pricing.
